The Mirena IUD® (intrauterine device) is a soft, flexible intrauterine device (IUD) that releases small amounts of hormone locally into your uterus. It gives you birth control you can count on—that lasts for as long as you want, for up to 5 years. Mirena does not protect against HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Choice Medical Group (Now FPA Women’s Health) offers Mirena after your surgical or medication abortion. If you are having a surgical abortion, we can often insert the IUD at the same visit. If you are having a medication abortion, the IUD can be placed at your follow up visit once we confirm you are no longer pregnant. It takes 15 minutes or less to insert the device. Depending on your circumstances, we may test you for gonorrhea infection at the time of placement.
Let any of our staff know if you’re interested in Mirena. We will make sure Mirena is an appropriate contraception method for you and schedule your IUD insertion any one of our three locations.
